Real Sociedad – Barcelona Tips & Predictions For Today, January 14, 2018.
League: Spain – LaLiga Santander
Tip: Over 2.5 Goals
Match Result: 2:4 WON!!!
A trip to San Sebastian is never top of any Barcelona supporters’ travel plans. Their dreadful La Liga (LL) record at Real Sociedad should give the hosts confidence ahead of the second game back after the Christmas break. But, is that enough to cause an upset?
It hasn’t been a season to celebrate so far for Real Sociedad. They are down in 12th place in LL after 18 games (23pts) and also recently crashed out of the Copa del Rey against third-tier opponents, Leganes. The hosts are desperate for a lift and they don’t need to look further than the 3-1 win over Sevilla just before the break.
Barcelona have a nine-point advantage at the top of LL after 18 games (48pts), but history tells us that titles aren’t won or lost in January. A slip up in San Sebastian will be welcomed by rivals and with tricky encounters lying in the wait, Barcelona can ill-afford that; not even with their seemingly insurmountable lead!
However, Sociedad haven’t been their usual best in home matches, winning just thrice in nine LL games (W3, D3, L3). Only two out of those nine matches (22%) finished with under 2.5 match goals, and that’s a fair indication of the goal action!
That pales in comparison with their visitors who are unbeaten in nine away LL games (W7, D2, L0). On away tours, they picked up six clean sheets out of nine (67%) and conceded just three goals, while scoring 19 goals.
Players to watch: Ousmane Dembele was the potential replacement for Neymar, but injuries cut short the presumptive heir initiation. Now that he is fit however, can Dembele showcase his talent to the Nou Camp faithful?
Talking of talent and injuries, Adnan Januzaj of Sociedad travels in the same boat and it will be interesting to see if the fit-again Belgian can start repaying the club’s faith in him with some exciting performances.
Stat attack: Barcelona haven’t won in any of their last seven league visits (W0, D2, L5) to Sociedad, with their last win surprisingly coming all the way back in 2007. The visitors have kept a clean sheet in their last four LL games. Should they maintain that, it would be the first time since May 2016 that they have managed five clean sheets in a row!
