Match Preview

  • Battling overwhelming odds, Espanyol will have to become just the third side from 221 previous UEFA Cup/Europa League (UEL) knockout ties to progress after losing the first leg by a four-goal margin. However, Espanyol’s only 4+ goal-margin UEL victory since February 2013 (excluding qualification) came against a nine-man Ludogorets this season.
  • However that Ludogorets game was the last time Espanyol scored the opener in the UEL, having conceded first in their three UEL games since (twice by the 25th minute). The hosts are in dire straits domestically, sitting rock-bottom of La Liga. They are, however, unbeaten in four at home (W1, D3) though they did fail to win after leading at half-time in three of their last five home league games (D2, L1).
  • Visiting Wolverhampton Wanderers have scored a whopping 17 goals across their six European away games this term (W5, D1 – 2.83 per match). Curiously though, their only prior European away game vs Spanish opposition saw a 4-0 defeat to Espanyol’s city rivals, Barcelona, albeit in 1960.
  • Wolves have been solid yet uninspiring away from home of late, winning just three of their last 11 domestic matches (W3, D4, L4), and failing to score in three of their last six such games. However, they are enjoying a run of 366 minutes without conceding a goal (in all competitions).
  • Players to watch: Adri Embarba has scored two of Espanyol’s last three goals, his first goals for the club since his January move.
  • Diogo Jota (WOL) sent himself to the top of the UEL scoring charts with consecutive hat-tricks in each of his last two appearances in the competition.
  • Stat attack: Espanyol have received a red card in two of their last three competitive matches.
  • Wolves boss Nuno Espírito Santo has won just one of three away managerial H2Hs with Espanyol (W1, L2).
  • Wolves have scored 3+ goals in each of their last three UEL matches.
