Match Preview

  • Atalanta have given themselves a real shot of qualifying after a shock 2-0 win over Liverpool in the last round, becoming the first team to win at Anfield by a 2+ goal margin across Jurgen Klopp’s 137 home games in charge. However they followed that up with a 2-0 home defeat versus Verona, continuing their topsy-turvy form across their previous ten competitive matches (W3, D3, L4).
  • Despite a five-game winless home run (D2, L3), which includes conceding 2+ goals in both UEFA Champions League (UCL) home matches (D1, L1) and trailing at HT, Atalanta are huge favourites to win here. A victory would guarantee they enter the final matchday in the top two, and therefore qualification would be in their own hands.
  • Without a point and guaranteed to finish last, UCL group stage debutants Midtjylland are playing for pride only – but a 4-0 thrashing in the reverse fixture will be fresh in their minds. Their previous European away game against Italian opposition was similarly harsh, with the three-time Danish champions being beaten 5-0 by Napoli on that occasion (2015/16).
  • Just three wins from their previous nine competitive away games (W3, D2, L4), all against domestic opponents that are of questionable quality, shows the visitors’ recent form is unlikely to save them from another hammering here. However, Midtjylland did manage a goalless draw at HT in both previous UCL group stage away games, so they do have the potential to frustrate their more illustrious opponents in this clash.
  • Players to watch: Duván Zapata has scored both of Atalanta’s UCL home goals this season, and grabbed the opener in the reverse fixture. Meanwhile, Anders Dreyer has scored one of Midtjylland’s two UCL group stage goals – four of his last five competitive strikes were as his side’s first goalscorer.
  • Hot stat: Atalanta have failed to score before HT in seven of their last eight competitive home games.
