Match Preview

  • West Ham United’s last match saw them lose gallantly against champions elect Manchester City to stay on 45 points, despite equalising for a level HT score. David Moyes’ men still remain firmly in contention for Europe, and are five points better off than they were at the same juncture in the 2015/16 Premier League (PL) campaign – the last to yield European qualification.
  • Naturally, Moyes’ ultimate aim is to lead a PL team under his charge to the top four for the first time since 2005. His then-side Everton sat on 48 points after 26 PL games 16 years ago, and – much like that team – West Ham have been hard to beat on home turf. Prior to Saturday, only Man City boasted a better home record than West Ham (W7, D3, L3).
  • Drawless in the PL since November (W8, L9), Leeds United enter this match as clear outsiders, and they’ve certainly struggled to upset the odds when not match favourites in PL away games this term (W3, L6). Set-piece goals may well heighten that loss rate, as Leeds have conceded 19 goals from set-pieces across all venues – a league-high ahead of the round.
  • With five of their opponents’ last six home league games producing over 2.5 goals, and favouring the hosts 66.67% of the time therein, Leeds must tighten up defensively – particularly in the early stages. Ahead of the weekend’s action, no team had conceded more first-half goals than them (27), with the ‘Whites’ letting in 3+ goals on four occasions.
  • Players to watch: West Ham forward Michail Antonio has netted in each of his side’s last two PL matches, while six of his seven league goals this term have come before HT. In opposition, Leeds striker Patrick Bamford is known as a man with real staying power – his last three PL goals have come between the 45th-75th minutes of play.
  • Hot stat: Leeds United saw their February league fixtures witness an average of 2.67 goals per game.
