Aston Villa – Chelsea Match Preview

  • Following a dramatic comeback victory last time out, inconsistent Aston Villa have won as many as they’ve lost across their previous five Premier League (PL) matches (W2, D1, L2), but are assured of an 11th place finish no matter what. In any case, we could be in for plenty of goals here given that Villa’s last nine league games have averaged 3.22 goals.
  • Villa Park has not been a happy home for the hosts who’ve won just one of their last eight league games there (D3, L4), this includes failures to win three of their last four despite scoring first (D1, L2). But although Dean Smith’s men start as underdogs, they boast the third-best PL win-rate when doing so (W7, D2, L8).
  • It is crunch time for Chelsea who must win here if they are to hold onto their top-four spot. They’ll be confident given that they bounced back from consecutive 1-0 defeats to overcome Leicester City in midweek, but their less than remarkable win rate of 51.61% as PL favourites does not inspire confidence that this will be a formality (W16, D9, L6).
  • This has been the first campaign across England’s top-four tiers that has seen more away wins (150) than home wins (137) and Chelsea are great contributors to this after going eight PL away games without loss (W6, D2). Moreover, the ‘Blues’ kept three clean sheets from their last five PL trips and six of their ten PL away wins came ‘to nil’.
  • Players to watch: Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins is the first Englishman to score 14+ goals in his debut PL season since Charlie Austin in 2014/15 – six were match openers. Unlucky Chelsea forward Timo Werner has amazingly had more competitive goals chalked off (14) than he’s scored (12) this season.
  • Hot stat: Villa manager Smith is yet to win any personal H2H with Chelsea (D1, L4) despite his side failing to score in all but one.
