Poland – Iceland Match Preview

  • Poland conclude their preparations for EURO 2020 hoping to improve further on their current run of just one loss in their last 12 home matches (W8, D3, L1). However, the sight of them leaking early goals is a concern ahead of the upcoming tournament, with the Polish conceding before the 25th minute in three of their last four games across all venues.
  • The #21-ranked Poland’s 1-1 draw vs Russia (June 1) was their first match in six not to feature any scoring after the 80th minute. However, they could end up relying on a ‘late show’ to win here, having emerged victorious in all four prior home H2Hs vs Iceland despite never leading at the break (HT: D2, L2).
  • Late action has been an overriding theme for Iceland too, as there’s been an average of 1.75 goals per game between the 70th minute and FT across their last four fixtures. However, Iceland could be in for a punishing experience, having lost their last ten games against sides currently ranked in the top 25, the last seven of which saw them concede 2+ goals.
  • The visitors have lost seven of their previous nine away internationals, while last avoiding defeat on foreign soil against a top-25 ranked team back in November 2019. However, those sensing an imminent shock should note that four of Iceland’s last six wins away from home have seen them score an opener before the 25th minute.
  • Players to watch: A man in form, Kamil Jóźwiak has seen both of his prior international strikes arrive within Poland’s last five games. In opposition, Iceland’s Mikael Anderson was a match-winning substitute against the Faroe Islands last time out, but the Midtjylland winger has picked up bookings in two of his last three games for club and country.
  • Hot stat: None of Iceland’s last eight fixtures have featured a goalless second half.
