Sampdoria – AC Milan Match Preview

  • Sampdoria finished last season in ninth for the third time in four Serie A (SA) campaigns and will start the 2021/22 season with a new manager, Roberto D‘Aversa. His first task is to try and break a run of three opening day defeats ‘to-nil‘ for the ‘Blucerchiati‘, although encouragingly his new side did finish the last campaign with three victories despite a -1 betting handicap across their final four home SA outings.
  • The last meeting against AC Milan here saw the hosts register a HT/FT defeat, and excluding the bottom three, only two SA clubs lost more home matches when trailing at HT last season (five). That clash between these two was also one of 13 Sampdoria SA home matches to produce over 2.5 goals – only Inter had more.
  • Stefano Pioli brought Champions league football back to AC Milan last season after the club finished in the top-four for the first time since 2012/13 (2nd). His side also impressively set a new all-time record for away wins in a SA season (16) – that’s a feat that no side has bettered across Europe’s top-five leagues in a single campaign.
  • Concerningly for Pioli though, the ‘Rossoneri’ have lost four opening away matches across the last six seasons (W2). They’ll therefore be thankful of this fairly favorable start on paper – they‘ve won six of the last eight competitive H2Hs held here (L2, including extra time).
  • Players to watch: Veteran Fabio Quagliarella, who was Sampdoria’s top scorer with 13 league goals last season, celebrated his 500th appearance in the final fixture of the previous campaign. Milan’s new signing Olivier Giroud will try to make a quick impact at his new club, he’s netted three of his previous five competitive goals inside the opening 35 minutes.
  • Hot stat: Milan were one of only two teams across Europe’s top-five divisions to see all their away league matches produce 2+ goals.
