Peru – Uruguay Match Preview

  • Peru finished fourth in this summer’s Copa América and must use that performance as a springboard to move away from the bottom of the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualification (WCQ) standings after losing four of their six games so far (W1, D1, L4). Those four WCQ losses were all back-to-back, the first time they’d suffered that many consecutive defeats in all games since losing eight between 2008 and 2009, a run that coincidentally ended by beating Uruguay.
  • That game was decided by a single strike and recent H2Hs have also been close affairs, with the last three each producing under 2.5 goals (W1, D1, L1). It wasn’t always the case though as Peru’s first ever international saw them beaten 4-0 by Uruguay at home back in 1927!
  • Uruguay still lead the overall H2H stakes (W38, D14, L17) but their build-up has been disrupted by a row over experienced striker Edinson Cavani’s absence due to Covid restrictions. Following a Copa América quarter-final exit, they lie fourth in the WCQ standings (W2, D2, L2) with plenty of work to do if they’re to qualify for Qatar 2022.
  • More encouragingly, they’ve only lost one of their last seven matches played on foreign soil (W3, D3 – outcomes at 90 minutes). They also have a good record in recent H2Hs outside of Uruguay (W2, D3, L1 – excludes extra-time/penalties), although none of those matches witnessed scoring before the 20th minute.
  • Key battleGianluca Lapadula netted in three of Peru’s last five internationals but never before the 40th minute. As no Uruguay player other than absentees Cavani and Luis Suárez has scored in an international since November, the visitors may need captain Diego Godín to marshal their defence effectively – he’s helped them keep clean sheets in five of his last seven appearances.
  • Hot stat: Uruguay have collected two or fewer yellow cards in each of their last eight matches played on foreign soil.
