Cagliari – Venezia Match Preview

  • Although still early into the season, both Cagliari and Venezia will be looking at this one as a real Serie A (SA) survival ‘six-pointer’. The hosts are one of only two sides going into the gameweek without a league win (D2, L4) and are hoping to avoid going a seventh opening game without a SA victory for the first time since 2006/07!
  • That recent form highlights how new manager Walter Mazzarri hasn’t quite delivered the upturn in form many ‘Isolani’ fans would have hoped for, and history suggests it’ll be tough for him to fix that here. Cagliari have failed to win any of the previous five H2H SA clashes (D2, L3), although they did at least avoid defeat in all but one of the six Serie B meetings since then (W3, D2).
  • Whilst they start the week just one place above Cagliari in 18th, Venezia do at least have one win under their belt so far (D1, L4). On the back of their 1-1 draw with Torino last time out, they can now avoid defeat in two consecutive SA games for the first time since February 2002 if they can pick up a result here!
  • The league newbies may be buoyed by that prospect, but that, as well as league survival, will be tough to achieve if they don’t start upping the ante in front of goal. Only Genoa have attempted a fewer number of shots than Venezia (57), and they rank joint-bottom for the fewest number of goals scored.
  • Players to watch: Cagliari’s João Pedro has been involved in nine goals in his last ten SA matches against newly-promoted sides (G8, A1). No player contributed to more Venezia league goals than Mattia Aramu last season (G10, A6), and he’s already contributed to half of their efforts this campaign (G1, A1).
  • Hot stat: After three winless games since taking over, Mazzarri could become the first Cagliari manager since 2014 to fail to win his first four SA games!
