Germany – Romania Match Preview

  • Despite surely being satisfied with a World Cup Qualification (WCQ) group that contains no other side in FIFA’s top 40, 14th-ranked Germany somehow conspired to lose 2-1 to North Macedonia at home back in March. They’ve subsequently rebounded under the tutelage of new coach Hansi Flick, scoring 12 goals without reply in three straight wins, and sit comfortably atop Group J.
  • That embarrassing home loss was followed by a disappointing Euro 2020 finals when Germany went out in the first knockout round to arch rivals England. Yet with just three defeats in 100 historical WCQ games, they should be confident here, although all three losses did come at home. Recent home form is indifferent too for the four-time world champions, with just three wins in their last six on home soil (D1, L2) and just one clean sheet!
  • Romania started these qualifiers with two defeats in three (W1, L2), including a home loss to Germany, but have come back strongly to go unbeaten and keep three clean sheets (W2, D1). Those results mean they still remain in contention in this group as they aim for their first participation at the World Cup finals since 1998.
  • Whilst they will start as huge outsiders here, Romania do face opposition that no longer have the same fear factor. They also come into the match after two unbeaten away games in this competition, including a 0-0 draw last time out at Germany’s conquerors, North Macedonia.
  • Players to watch: The resurrection of Leroy Sané is currently one of the biggest topics in Germany, after he was involved in 14 goals in his last 11 games for club and country (G6, A8). Nicolae Stanciu scored Romania’s last away goal, and his previous seven goals for club and country have now arrived after the 50th minute.
  • Hot stat: Germany and Romania have won all their WCQ games in this edition after they scored first, but have lost each game when they conceded first.
