Spezia – Salernitana Match Preview

  • A poor return of only one victory in the opening seven Serie A (SA) rounds suggests that Spezia might be in the throes of ‘second season syndrome’, after avoiding the relegation fight for most of their debut top-flight season last term. Things could get better here against Salernitana though, as they are yet to lose a single competitive home H2H (W6, D1).
  • They’ve also found the net in 11 of their last 12 home SA matches, but will need to improve on their second-half performances. Thiago Motta’s side have lost all three home matches so far, despite each of them witnessing a level half-time score.
  • Salernitana will likely travel up along the Tyrrhenian coast in a better mood than Spezia, despite possessing the same record as their hosts (W1, D1, L5), as they finally celebrated their first SA victory in over two decades last time out. However, they also had four points after the opening seven rounds back in 1998/99, when they were ultimately relegated.
  • Emphasising Salernitana’s struggles this season is the fact that they have produced a league-low 20 shots on target. This makes it all the less surprising that they have lost each of their three SA away matches so far, conceding eight times in the process, but only once before the break.
  • Players to watch: Spezia’s Emmanuel Gyasi has scored his two goals this season before the break, doing so in games producing over 3.5 goals with both teams scoring. A likely danger amongst the opposition, three of Milan Djurič’s last six goals for Salernitana have come beyond the hour mark, including his winner last time out.
  • Hot stat: In SA this season, 36 goals have been conceded in the 61st-75th minute period. These two sides combined conceded over a quarter (ten) of them.
