Cadiz CF – Mallorca Match Preview

  • Cádiz and Mallorca will meet for the first time since they were traversing Spain’s second division in 2018/19. As the conclusion of the first trimester of the La Liga (LL) season approaches, Cádiz are currently in danger of returning to that very league as they continually flirt with the relegation zone. The hosts are no strangers to extended misery in this league though, but their current six-game winless run will still be hard to bear (D3, L3).
  • This is actually Cádiz’s worst start to a season in either of Spain’s top two leagues since being sent down from the Segunda División in 1994/95, and there’s been plenty to worry about along the way. They go into the round as one of three clubs yet to win a home LL game this season, with their most recent defeat to Alavés (L 0-2) also their only start as pre-match favourites this campaign.
  • Mallorca have been slowly building their way to their first LL win since early October, with consecutive draws enough to keep the relegation trio comfortably at bay for now. That will be the ultimate goal after being immediately sent back down to the second tier at the conclusion of 2019/20.
  • It could be a nervous outing for head coach Luis García, who was previously sacked immediately after failing to defeat Cádiz when in charge of Elche back in 2007! Signs of a breakthrough for his current side have been emerging though, with Mallorca opening the scoring and leading at half-time in each of their two recent LL draws.
  • Players to watch: Cádiz have now earned points on both occasions that Anthony Lozano has opened the scoring this LL season, whilst Dani Rodríguez was the only member of Mallorca’s last starting XI to have scored multiple first-half goals this LL campaign.
  • Hot stat: The pre-match favourite has just won 35% of LL matches involving either club this season (W8, D9, L6).
