Empoli – Genoa Match Preview

  • Two goals beyond the 80th minute gave Empoli a crucial 2-1 win last time out in Serie A (SA), pushing them towards the top half as they look to avoid immediate relegation this campaign. That victory gave the Tuscany-based outfit a fourth win from their first five away SA games for only the second time in their history, whilst it also marked the first time this SA season that one of Empoli’s matches didn’t have the same result at both half-time and full-time.
  • Although their away form makes for pretty reading, Empoli’s home record is the opposite. The hosts have conceded 2+ goals in each SA home game so far and have lost five of their first six home games in a single SA campaign for the first time in the club’s history!
  • A goalless draw against Venezia last matchday didn’t help Genoa out too much, as they remain just outside the relegation places only by virtue of goal difference. One of only two teams to have won just once this SA campaign, Genoa are now winless in eight SA outings, equalling a run in 2013 under coach Davide Ballardine in his earlier spell at the club.
  • Genoa have become synonymous with slow starts, having failed to score during the first half in ten of their 11 SA games this season, a tally bigger than any other side in the competition. There’s optimism for this trip though, as their lone SA win came away from home, whilst here, ‘I Rossoblù’ are actually looking for a third straight SA away H2H win vs Empoli.
  • Players to watch: On-loan striker Andrea Pinamonti has been in sparkling form with his last four goals coming in three SA wins for Empoli. Effective but not quite on the same scale, Domenico Criscito’s last three SA goals have come in draws for Genoa.
  • Hot stat: Genoa are the only side yet to score first in a SA match this campaign.
