West Brom – Nottingham Match Preview

  • The promotion picture looks even bleaker for out-of-sorts West Brom after a 0-0 draw against Blackpool on Tuesday left even their play-off spot looking rather precarious ahead of the visit of Nottingham Forest. While their previous five-match form makes for grim reading (W1, D2, L2), a return to the Hawthorns could be the catalyst for a revival, as the ‘Baggies’ are the only side left in the division with an unbeaten home record (W6, D3).
  • Moans and groans have now started regarding Valérien Ismaël’s style of play, but on home soil, his West Brom side have averaged the joint-fourth highest possession of any Championship side (56.9%). That’s led to the ‘Baggies’ conceding the joint-fewest goals on home soil so far this league season (five), a record they’ll be keen to further improve upon here.
  • In stark contrast, Nottingham Forest fans are loving life under new boss Steve Cooper, who has rejuvenated the 1979 and 1980 European Cup winners. They make the relatively short trip across the Midlands on the back of a five-match unbeaten run (W1, D4), aligned with a seven-match unbeaten run on the road (W4, D3) – although none of those away wins came against teams above them in the table prior to kick-off.
  • Adding another victory to their away column though will require Cooper to collect a maiden managerial victory against West Brom (D1, L1). Holding the key to victory would normally entail scoring first, but two of Forest’s last four away wins have been comebacks and their ten points recovered from losing positions ranks them in the upper echelons amongst the 23 other Championship teams.
  • Players to watch: West Brom’s Karlan Grant has scored in four of West Brom’s last five Championship home games, all of which resulted in victories, while Philip Zinckernagel has five goal involvements in Forest’s last five Championship away outings (G2, A3).
  • Hot stat: There has been a goal scored beyond the 85th minute in three of the last four H2H meetings.
