Granada CF – Alaves Match Preview

  • Having picked up exactly nine points less than they had at this stage in each of the last two campaigns, Granada look set for a battle to maintain their La Liga (LL) status this season. However so do visitors Deportivo Alavés, making this a crucial early season ‘six-pointer’. Granada have managed just two victories so far (D6, L6), both accompanied by a clean sheet, although shutouts have too often been in short supply overall, highlighted by the fact that the hosts come into this matchday with the joint-third worst defensive record in the league (GA 22).
  • Granada’s last three league goals have all arrived before half-time, as have 64% of their total LL efforts this season. They also netted their first goal of the game before the break in each of the last three H2H clashes, however, any edge these early goals provide is usually short-lived due to a growing vulnerability when it comes to defending late on. That’s because only two LL sides have now conceded more goals after the 75th minute this season than Granada’s seven.
  • Although still early in the season, Alavés can build upon their two-point lead over Granada as they aim to steer clear of the chasing relegation-threatened pack. Recent form should give them confidence as their defeat last time out against Celta Vigo was their first in six league matches (W3, D2) and only the second game in ten LL clashes in which they conceded more than a single goal.
  • That fairly solid defence will be tested here though given that Granada’s attack tends to come alive against Alavés, netting 2+ goals in each of the last five H2H meetings. Unsurprisingly four of those ended in defeat for Alavés (W1, L4).
  • Players to watch: Granada’s Luis Suárez has scored between minutes 30’-39’ in two of his last four LL appearances. Alavés’ Joselu has been on fire with four goals across his last three LL matches – albeit two were penalties.
  • Hot stat: There’s been four red cards shown across Granada’s last seven league matches.
