Paris SG – Bordeaux Match Preview

  • Paris Saint-Germain will need to rally quickly after being eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in midweek. Still unbeaten at Parc des Princes this Ligue 1 campaign (W12, D1), PSG should regroup, and they remain firmly on course to tie St Étienne as the most successful team in the French top-flight history with a tenth Ligue 1 title.
  • Like true champions-elect, PSG boast a solid defence which has kept a clean sheet in 54% of their league outings here. They’re unsurprisingly prolific scorers too and have enjoyed playing Bordeaux in recent years, with the Parisians scoring at least twice in seven of their last eight Ligue 1 home H2Hs against ‘Les Girondins’. Unsurprisingly, their last home defeat to Bordeaux came back in August 2010.
  • Bordeaux themselves travel to the capital with a joint league-low four victories in Ligue 1 this campaign (W4, D10, L13). That has the visitors sitting rock bottom on goal difference in what is shaping up to be one of Europe’s tightest relegation battles – so tight that a shock win here could take them out of the relegation zone.
  • Their tally of 65 goals conceded is the worst in the top five European leagues though, and the last team to concede so many goals at this stage in Ligue 1 was Avignon back in 1975/76 (20th – relegated). Yet, on a slightly positive note, Bordeaux’s 18 goals scored on the road is the best amongst the bottom-half teams in Ligue 1.
  • Players to watch: PSG’s Neymar has scored more goals against Bordeaux than any other Ligue 1 club (seven in six meetings). As for Bordeaux, their most likely threat could be Hwang Ui-Jo, who has scored six of his ten league strikes so far this season on the road.
  • Hot stat: No Ligue 1 side has conceded more penalties this season than Bordeaux (nine).
