Match Result: 2:0 WON!!!Middlesbrough – Cardiff Preview
- While a draw away to Swansea over the weekend finally took Middlesbrough’s play-off fate out of their own hands, manager Chris Wilder remained defiant in the aftermath stating that his side are “firmly in the hunt”. This match represents Middlesbrough’s long-awaited game in hand, and victory would move Boro to within two points of the top-six places with just two games remaining.
- The law of averages seems to have bitten down hard on Middlesbrough, who have followed up a stunning nine-game run of home wins with a disastrous sequence of four straight home defeats without reply! Highlighting just how bad their current scoreless home run is, Boro haven’t failed to score in 4+ competitive home games since a run of five in 2003/04!
- With nothing left to play for but places and trying to dent the play-off hopes of others, Cardiff City’s loss at Sheffield United sent the Yorkshire club three points clear in the last remaining playoff play, a result which directly impacted Boro. Boss Steve Morison still hailed his Cardiff side for being “excellent” in defeat as he looks to end their run of three straight losses.
- Cardiff games are often closely-fought affairs with just one of their last 12 games being settled by more than a single goal. Another defeat will all but consign Cardiff to their worst league finish this century of 16th in 2004/05, but this game’s underdogs should at least put up a fight as shown by their 50% unbeaten rate as away league betting outsiders (W5, D3, L8), and based on their decent record here over the last three seasons (W2, D1).
- Players to watch: Riley McGree stepped up for Middlesbrough following Matty Crooks’ three-match ban, scoring his first goal for the club last time out. For Cardiff, Middlesbrough-born striker Jordan Hugill could become the second former player to score against Boro in the space of two home games if he can grab a fourth career goal against his hometown club.
- Hot stat: Just one of the last seven H2Hs produced at least three match goals.
