An unmissable relegation six-pointer will be rounding off the 22nd week of the 2017/18 La Liga (LL) season, as Las Palmas and Malaga face each other at the Estadio de Gran Canaria with just one point separating the two sides.
The hosts, who have suffered more defeats (15) than any other club in LL so far this campaign, come into the game off the back of a 3-0 loss away to Atletico Madrid. Las Palmas currently sit in 19th place on 14 points (W4, D2, L15) and have already conceded a whopping 50 goals this term.
Rock-bottom Malaga (W3, D4, L14) now find themselves seven points adrift of safety and head into Monday night’s clash in terrible form having failed to win any of their last six LL outings (W0, D2, L4). They have scored just once in that period.
These two clubs have met a total of 33 times in the top-flight, with Malaga leading the head-to-head 14-12 (seven draws). The Andalusian side have tasted victory in 21 of their 51 trips to Las Palmas in all competitions (W21, D13, L17), but were defeated 3-1 in the reverse fixture back in September.
Players to watch: Las Palmas’ new attacking players Oghenekaro Etebo and Emmanuel Emenike, both from Nigeria, will likely make their debuts this Monday.
Tianjin Teda’s loanee striker Brown Ideye could also earn his first minutes for Malaga. Can he make a positive difference in their struggling attack?
Stat attack: Las Palmas have the worst second-half goal difference (-25) in LL this campaign (GF 10, GA 35).
Malaga’s struggles in front of goal keep harming them – just 14 league goals to their name and they have been unable to find the back of the net in 14 league games so far this season.

Match Preview

Round 22 of La Liga (LL) brings us the third Catalan derby (Espanyol v Barcelona) in just three weeks, the second at the RCDE Stadium. The clash is expected to be heated after Gerard Piqué’s statement in the press conference after Barcelona knocked out Espanyol in the Copa del Rey. The defender called them “Espanyol from ‘Cornellà’”, instead of ‘Barcelona’.
Espanyol v Barcelona is also the clash between the best attack versus one of the worst attacks in LL. Whereas the ‘Blaugrana’ are the side with the most goals scored (59), Espanyol have only 18 goals in 21 matches, less than one per match.
Espanyol have been the only side capable of beating Barcelona this season (if we don’t count the Spanish Supercopa in August). However, after they achieved the 1-0 victory in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, the ‘Pericos’ then lost their next three fixtures.
As for Barcelona, they remain unbeaten after an epic comeback last Sunday at the Camp Nou v Alavés (2-1). Leo Messi became the top free-kick taker in LL with his 20th goal, overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo (19). The Argentinian has scored two free-kick goals in the last three LL clashes.
Players to watchPhilippe Coutinho spent six months on loan as an Espanyol player when he was just 20 years old. Now he is back at the RCDE stadium waiting to score his first goal in a Barca kit.
Espanyol’s top scorer Gerard Moreno (8) has only scored one in the last five fixtures. Where better than a Barcelona v Espanyol clash to find the back of the net again! Moreno has scored 75% of his goals in home matches.
Stat attack: In order to find the last time Espanyol won a Catalan derby at their stadium we have to go back until season ‘06/07. Actually, the ‘Pericos’ have failed to score in the last five home derbies. The record speaks for itself: 0-8 for Barcelona.

Match Preview

Venlo are in high spirits after their 1-0 win against Breda. Here, they welcome the defending champions Feyenoord. The visitors are also in high spirits after seeing off PSV 2-0 in midweek to reach the semi-final of the KNVB Beker cup.
The hosts sit comfortably in tenth place, just five points behind the European spots. Whilst they are not in immediate contention for Europe, their position will come as welcome reading to the VVV faithful who are enjoying their first season back in the top flight!
Feyenoord look to be finding their shooting boots again, as in the second half of the last game at Den Haag, the Rotterdammers managed more shots than in the entire five previous halves of football combined.
Venlo manager Maurice Steijn explained how he can’t quite believe his side have 26 points at this stage of the season: “We have the lowest budget, and the smallest squad in the league, but that doesn’t mean we finish in last place,” said a triumphant Steijn after their last victory. Anything is a bonus now as VVV have already surpassed expectations.
Players to watch: Lennart Thy comes into this game fresh from scoring vs Breda last time out in the league, he now has four goals from his last three appearances. The German forward has had the most turnovers of any Eredivisie (ERE) player this term (70).
Nicolai Jorgensen remains a Feyenoord player despite recently being linked with a move to Newcastle. He has been directly involved in ten goals this term with seven goals and three assists.
Stat attack: Feyenoord are unbeaten in ten of their last 11 league games, whilst Venlo are unbeaten in their last four (ERE).
Five of the last seven meetings between these two sides has seen both teams scoring, six of their last eight meetings have saw over 2.5 goals in all competitions.
