Bulgaria – Northern Ireland Match Preview

  • Bulgaria’s wait to appear in a World Cup for the first time since 1998 appears to be on hold for at least another campaign, as their slim chances were all but eradicated in their 3-1 loss to Lithuania in their previous Group C World Cup Qualification (WCQ) match. Goals have been the problem for the Bulgarians, and failing to score more than once in a WCQ match this cycle has hindered their ability to pick up results.
  • The ‘Lions’ have usually been the hunted rather than the hunter recently, having won only four of their last 32 matches (D10, L18), albeit two of those wins came in the pair of games preceding their loss to Lithuania. They also played out a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture against Northern Ireland to make it four successive fixtures undefeated against their opponents (W3, D1).
  • Northern Ireland will need more than the luck of the Irish to keep their Qatar 2022 dreams alive, as they sit tied on points in Group C with Bulgaria having played a game less. A 2-0 loss to Switzerland last time out shows their quality to compete on the big stage isn’t quite there yet, as they attempted only two shots in that game.
  • The ‘Green and White Army’ have soldiered on away from home in recent times however, winning three of their last five away fixtures (L2), equalling the number they achieved in their prior 17 away matches. Historically, they haven’t been too successful against Bulgaria, winning only two of the eight H2H matches (D2, L4), and even a win here would probably still make qualification a near-impossible task.
  • Players to watch: Bulgaria’s Kiril Despodov has been in the action lately, registering a goal and two assists across his last three internationals, Meanwhile, Paddy McNair has created eight chances in this WCQ campaign for Northern Ireland, double that of any other teammate.
  • Hot stat: Bulgaria have only lost four of their last 20 home WCQ fixtures (W12, D4).
